Farewell to the Turdburger.
The Sabres' horrific third jersey, widely panned by fans and observers around hockey since the day it was unveiled via a bizarre Twitter "spat" with captain Steve Ott prior to last season, will not be worn after this season.
Team president Ted Black, speaking during a regularly scheduled segment today on WGR Radio, confirmed the team will shelve the alternate sweater when the 2014-15 campaign ends.
Black admitted the team did a poor job running the design past focus groups and also said, "we didn't anticipate the amount of 'third-jersey fatigue' " in the market in the wake of the team's 40th anniversary throwbacks.
It was Black, of course, who unintentionally christened the gold sweaters when he responded to the immediate backlash prior to last season by saying, "If it's a turd burger I'll have to put it on a bun and eat it."
The name stuck, and it likely will forever.
Black said the Sabres will not have a third jersey next season and, in fact, may shelve the concept of an alternate sweater entirely until 2020, when the franchise will be celebrating its 50th anniversary.
